Topical Collection Information:

Dear Colleagues,

Extreme climate events, including droughts, floods, cyclones, and heatwaves, have significant socioeconomic consequences on societies all over the world, exert profound socioeconomic impacts on communities worldwide. Risk assessment in terms of hazard characterization, exposure assessment, and vulnerability analysis is the key area of this topical collection issue. This special issue delves into the intricate interplay between extreme climate events and socioeconomic dynamics, shedding light on the multifaceted consequences for individuals, households, businesses, and governments. Through interdisciplinary lenses, the collection of articles examines the ripple effects of extreme climate events on livelihoods, employment, food security, health outcomes, infrastructure resilience, and socio-political stability. Moreover, the issue explores strategies for mitigation, adaptation, and resilience-building efforts aimed at fostering sustainable socioeconomic development in the face of an increasingly volatile climate system. By synthesizing empirical evidence, theoretical insights, and practical solutions, this special issue contributes to a deeper understanding of the complex challenges and opportunities inherent in addressing the socioeconomic impacts of extreme climate events in the 21st century. Through empirical evidence and theoretical frameworks, this issue seeks to advance understanding and inform policy responses aimed at building resilient societies in the face of an increasingly volatile climate system.
