Topical Collection Information:

Dear Colleagues,

Journalism and media have always been impacted by technology. Lately, the advent of Web 2.0 and of innovative technologies in the broad audiovisual field, such as Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR), and 360-degree videos, has significantly changed the processes involved and the societal context of the profession. New forms of storytelling are deployed incorporating immersive and interactive media aiming at attracting the public’s attention while at the same time engaging wider audiences. Especially, younger audiences, due to short attention span, favor more condensed information presented in visual forms. Therefore, journalism education curricula should be reformed with effective teaching methods to encompass the technological competencies needed for all the novel forms of news production including immersive, multiplatform, and gamified content. Moreover, there is a substantial need for media literacy within this rapidly evolving field of information dissemination. Citizens who can think critically and evaluate media products may, among others, deal with propaganda and misinformation phenomena and become more responsible. Media literacy is not limited to understanding about tools and technologies involved but also expands to analysis of created content and awareness of the context included.

In this framework, this Topical Collection will focus on the way innovative audiovisual application systems may aid the amelioration of journalism education and reinforce media literacy. Therefore, original theoretical and research works are welcome. The topics include, but are not limited, to the following:

  • Mediated journalism education
  • Media literacy
  • Immersive audiovisual modes in journalism education
  • Innovative audiovisual modes in journalism education
  • Interactive audiovisual productions in journalism education
  • Audiovisual production techniques in media
