Topical Collection Information:

Dear Colleagues,

It is clear that the world has changed significantly in recent decades as a result of the tremendous innovations in telecommunications and computer technology. More precisely, the Internet of Things (IoT) opens up new opportunities and difficulties for cities, giving rise to the idea of smart cities. Smart cities promote information sharing, are more efficient and sustainable, and offer higher living standards. Building an urban environment that produces overall economic growth and a high quality of life for its citizens is the main objective of a smart city. Smart cities use a variety of technologies, such as big data, sensor networks, cloud computing, artificial intelligence, machine learning, and machine-to-machine communication, to accomplish these objectives. Actually, because they offer a fundamental and workable environment, sensor technologies are crucial for cities.

Despite extensive research in the literature, there are still many unanswered questions and open challenges when it comes to addressing wireless sensor network applications for smart cities. The goals of this special issue are to address problems related to data processing, management, heterogeneity of infrastructure, connection, energy waste, security, and privacy. This includes:

  • Wireless sensor network applications for smart cities;
  • Novel architectures, protocols and algorithms for wireless sensor network applications for smart cities;
  • Communication platforms and access technologies;
  • Theoretical modelling and frameworks for wireless sensor network applications for smart cities;
  • Case studies, real solutions, designs, and implementations of smart cities;
  • Security and privacy frameworks for wireless sensor network applications for smart cities;
  • Innovative techniques for wireless sensor network security applications for smart cities;
  • Environmental challenges for smart cities;
  • Solutions for smart transport and traffic;
  • Solutions for smart mobility and parking;
  • Solutions for smart street lighting infrastructure;
  • Solutions for urban infrastructure management;
  • Solutions for waste management;
  • Integrated renewable solutions based on big data analytics.

Manuscript Submission Information:

Please visit the Submissions Guidelines page before submitting a manuscript. Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Manuscripts should be submitted online through the online manuscript submission and editorial system. Additionally, please include a cover letter specifying that the manuscript is intended for the Topical Collection "Wireless Networks Applications for Smart Cities: Trends and Challenges" when submitting it online. Manuscripts can be submitted until the submission deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal and will be listed together on the Topical Collection website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract can be sent to the Editorial Office dtra@ukscip.com for announcement on this website.

The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 300 USD. Authors who are unable to cover this cost or those who are invited to submit papers may be eligible for discounts or waivers.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a double-blind peer-review process.
