Special Issue Information:

Dear Colleagues,

The initial promises of Industry 4.0 have now matured into a diversity of theoretical methods and implementations across the globe. This phenomenon started in business and moved toward establishment in markets and society, demanding holistic analysis by researchers and practitioners on its socio-technical frontiers. This special issue seeks to provide such a comprehensive and holistic snapshot of the Industry 4.0 phenomenon. We invite original work under the scope of this special issue, which covers empirical research grounded in the fields of either Computer Science or Production Engineering, developed through either quantitative, qualitative or systematic literature review methodologies, which present contributions that range from state-of-the-art to application cases and experiences. Subjects must address at least one of the following topics:

  • Connectivity-based proposals that combine Industry 4.0 fundamental concepts, such as Additive Manufacturing, Artificial Intelligence, Augmented Reality, Big Data, Cloud Computing, Cyber-physical Systems, Cybersecurity, Digital Twins, Integration Systems, Internet of Things, and Robotics; as well as related concepts, such as Blockchain, Edge/Fog Computing, Virtualization and Quantum and Post-quantum Computing and Networks.
  • Operations Management 4.0: Smart Factories; Mass Personalization; Industrial Internet of Things; Smart Production Planning, Scheduling and Control; Smart Logistics, Supply Chain and Transportation; Operations Research.
  • Sustainability 4.0: Energy Efficiency; Smart Environments; Smart Waste Management; Circular Economy; Digital Product Development; Governance; Integrated Management Systems; Digital Maturity Models; Digital Transformation and Society 5.0; Human-Centered Society; Current Legal, Ethical and Policy Issues; Assistive Technologies and Inclusion; Quality of Life.
  • Labor 4.0: Professional Skills and Competencies for the Future of Work in Manufacturing and Services; Telework; Human-machine Interaction and Ergonomics.
  • Education 4.0: Digital Education; Distance Learning; Active Methodologies; Education in Production Engineering and Computer Science.
  • Healthcare 4.0: Healthcare Interoperability; Internet of Medical Things; Novel Healthcare Services; Telehealth; Personalization of Care; Active Prevention.
  • Market Dynamics 4.0: Trends on Competitiveness, Strategy, and Key Performance Indicators in Global and Emerging Markets; Gig Economy; Cryptoeconomics; Digital Entrepreneurship and Digital Business Models.

Manuscripts can be submitted until the submission deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal and will be listed together on the Special Issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 1800 USD. Authors who are unable to cover this cost or those who are invited to submit papers may be eligible for discounts or waivers.
